Calculator Tools

Fourteen calculators covering loan repayment, compound growth, statutory benefits, everyday arithmetic and land measurement. All of them compute in your browser from the numbers you type, so nothing is stored and no figure you enter is sent anywhere; several offer an optional plain-language explanation of the result, which is the one action that contacts a server. What each calculator does not model is as important as what it does. A loan calculator returns the mathematically correct instalment for the principal, rate and tenure you give it, and a lender's letter will differ because of processing fees, insurance bundled into the disbursement, a rate that resets during the term, or the day of the month your first payment falls on. A growth calculator assumes the return you typed happens every year without interruption, which no market does. A statutory calculator applies the rule as published, and the rule has thresholds and eligibility conditions that a single input box cannot check. Read each result as the arithmetic being right, not as a promise — the assumptions behind the number are listed on every page.

Comparing two loan offers properly

Enter the same principal and tenure for both, changing only the rate -> compare total interest paid rather than the instalment, since a longer tenure lowers the monthly figure while raising the total -> add the processing fee to the principal to see the real cost -> check whether either rate is fixed or floating.

Working out what an investment actually returned

Use compound interest to project forwards from a rate you assume -> use CAGR to measure backwards from a start and end value you know -> compare the two, remembering that CAGR smooths every good and bad year into one figure and tells you nothing about the volatility along the way.

Checking a salary component or a benefit due to you

Work out the exempt portion of house rent allowance from basic, dearness allowance, rent paid and whether the city counts as a metro -> check the gratuity due against completed years of service -> project the retirement corpus separately, since it depends on a market return nobody can promise.

Best Practices & Practical Tips

  • Compare total outgo, not the instalment. Stretching a loan from fifteen years to twenty makes the monthly figure comfortable and can add more in interest than the entire down payment you saved.
  • Ask whether a quoted rate is on the reducing balance or flat. A flat rate charges interest on the original principal for the whole term even as you repay it, which works out to nearly double the equivalent reducing-balance rate.
  • Check the compounding frequency before comparing two returns. The same nominal rate compounded monthly ends higher than compounded annually, and the effective annual rate is the only figure on which two offers can be compared fairly.
  • Deposit into a PPF account before the fifth of the month. Interest for the month is computed on the lowest balance between the fifth and the last day, so a deposit on the sixth earns nothing for that month.
  • Re-run any statutory calculation against the current year's rules before acting on it. Thresholds, ceilings and regimes change with each budget, and last year's exempt figure is not this year's.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ⚠️Adding successive discounts together. Twenty per cent off followed by ten per cent off is twenty-eight per cent, not thirty, because the second reduction applies to the already reduced price.
  • ⚠️Treating CAGR as the return you would have experienced. It is the single rate that connects a start value to an end value; a holding that fell forty per cent in year one and recovered in year three has the same CAGR as one that rose smoothly, and they were not the same investment to hold.
  • ⚠️Assuming a market-linked projection is a commitment. Any figure a retirement or mutual fund calculator shows rests on the return you typed continuing for decades — change it by two percentage points and the corpus moves enormously.
  • ⚠️Reading BMI as a diagnosis. It is weight divided by the square of height and nothing more: it cannot tell muscle from fat, ignores where fat is carried, and is not valid for children, pregnancy or trained athletes.
  • ⚠️Converting bigha or katha with a single fixed factor. These units have no national definition — the same word means a materially different area in different states and sometimes in neighbouring districts — so the local figure has to come from the local record.

Frequently Asked Questions

What formula is the EMI based on?

The standard amortisation formula: EMI equals P multiplied by r multiplied by (1+r) to the power n, divided by ((1+r) to the power n, minus one) — where P is the principal, r is the annual rate divided by twelve and by a hundred, and n is the number of monthly payments. Every reducing-balance lender uses this. Differences from a sanction letter come from fees and rounding, not from the formula.

Why does my bank's EMI differ from the figure shown here?

Usually because the amount financed is not the amount you entered. Processing fees, documentation charges, stamp duty on the agreement and bundled insurance are commonly added to the disbursed principal. Beyond that, a floating rate resets during the term, part-payments change the schedule, and the interval between disbursement and the first instalment can add a broken-period interest charge.

How is gratuity calculated?

Under the Payment of Gratuity Act, it is fifteen days of wages for each completed year of service: last drawn basic plus dearness allowance, multiplied by fifteen, multiplied by years of service, divided by twenty-six. Five years of continuous service is normally required, a part-year above six months counts as a full year, and the statutory ceiling caps the exempt amount. Establishments outside the Act's coverage may use a different basis.

How much house rent allowance is exempt?

The least of three amounts: the HRA actually received; the rent you paid minus ten per cent of salary; and fifty per cent of salary if you live in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai, or forty per cent elsewhere. Salary here means basic plus dearness allowance. The exemption exists only under the old tax regime — if you have opted for the new one, it does not apply at all.

Are the numbers I enter stored or sent anywhere?

No. The arithmetic runs in the page on your own device, and salary figures, loan amounts and dates of birth are never transmitted or logged. The exception is deliberate and labelled: if you ask a calculator to explain its result in plain language, that one request goes to a language model. Leaving it alone keeps everything local.

Should I make a financial decision on these figures?

Use them to compare options and to sanity-check what somebody has quoted you, which is what they are good for. Do not use them as advice. They apply a formula to the inputs you supply and cannot see your tax regime, your other income, your existing liabilities or an eligibility condition you fail — for a decision with real money behind it, take the working to a qualified adviser or ask the lender for a full amortisation schedule in writing.
